After Martha's Vineyard, Heitz's Trailside plot is routinely ranked the runner-up - and deservedly so. Dark-opaque ruby in colour, the '06 is finely toasted, offering amazingly pure, textbook 'Heitz' aromas of mocha, currants, blackberries, scorched (reddish) earth, pain grille, eucalyptus, forest floor, vanilla, and spice. Very complex, delivering stunning, well-structured fruit, firm tannins, slightly milder acidity, and an elegant, forthright hint of mocha, currants, and 'red' eucalyptus on the finish.
