California experienced a cool growing season in 2010 that included significant early precipitation that delayed bud break. Ripening was assisted by August heat that followed the atypically cool summer. Balance between acidity and sugar was assisted by the return of cooler temperatures in September, and these temperatures also permitted a measured and gradual harvest. The Cabernet for the Vine Hill Ranch comes from four vineyard blocks, whose distinction is further enhanced by being planted with different clones. Hand harvested at night to preserve freshness, each lot is fermented and aged separately for 19 months in French oak before being blended. The 2010 Cakebread Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon has the concentration and richness typical of this wine, with intense black fruit, mineral and coffee tones. A wine of great structure, with firm tannins that will reward 10+ years of careful cellaring.
