Vina Falernia
Falernia Reserva Syrah 2010
From the fringes of viticulture in northern Chile's magical Elqui Valley, these vines grow at about 2,000 metres of altitude on cobbly soils, withstanding extreme climate conditions. The 2010, like the 2009 is a deep inky crimson colour, with a powerful nose of violets, brambly fruit, cracked pepper, smoked meat, and a fistful of stones. Intense fruit coats vigorous tannins, with racy acidity adding refreshment and balance. Aged in both French and American casks for half a year, oak is quietly in the background. A long finish shows off the freshness of the cool, protracted 2010 vintage (this is the earthquake year, so savour it with respect) and the concentration of lower crop levels. It's ageing wonderfully, and gets better every time I taste it. Last tasted July 2014. Score - 90. (D.J. Kearney, winealign.com, Aug. 6, 2014)
